Also known as vulvovaginal atrophy, or VVA, vaginal atrophy is the drying, inflammation, and thinning of vaginal walls that results from drops in estrogen levels. While it can derive from other causes, menopause is the most common.
Vaginal atrophy makes the lining of your vagina and vulva more sensitive, delicate, and prone to pain and irritation. You may experience vaginal burning and dryness, as well as pain during intercourse and light bleeding afterwards. Some women experience a burning sensation during urination and even urinary incontinence.
Treatment for vaginal atrophy used to be limited to hormone therapy, or replenishing lost estrogen through pills or vaginal applications. While often effective in relieving symptoms, estrogen therapy has been linked with breast and uterine cancer and isn’t ideal for all women. Laser therapy offers as safe and effective non-hormonal alternative.
MonaLisa Touch uses laser energy to prevent and treat vaginal atrophy. The medical laser delivers controlled energy to vaginal tissue, stimulating cells to produce more collagen. Drs. Rosenblatt and DiSciullo consider it the most most effective non-surgical and non-hormonal solution for preventing and treating the condition. Recent clinical findings on MonaLisa Touch showed positive results and high patient satisfaction from postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors.
MonaLisa Touch requires no anesthesia and typically takes less than 5 minutes per session. The therapy requires only 3 treatment sessions spaced about 6 weeks apart. Patients typically experience improved symptoms after their first treatment. After the third treatment you can expect to return for a single maintenance treatment each year. You can resume your usual daily activity immediately after each session but should refrain from intercourse for 2 - 7 days. Dr. Rosenblatt or DiSciullo will determine your specific post-procedure guidelines.
