Frequently Asked Questions about MonaLisa Touch
What is MonaLisa Touch?
MonaLisa Touch is an FDA approved medical laser treatment designed specifically for women with vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and vaginal atrophy. MonaLisa Touch will restore vaginal health, relieve symptoms of GSM (Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause) and may improve urinary symptoms such as urgency. See our “Science and Technology” section for more information.
How does laser work on vaginal and vulvar tissues?
The MonaLisa Touch uses laser technology to stimulate vaginal tissues which increases collagen production. As the repair process continues, vaginal elasticity and glandular activity increase, resulting in a microscopically normal and healthy vaginal mucosa after three painless treatments.
Is MonaLisa Touch laser safe?
Yes. MonaLisa Touch employs the same CO2 laser wavelength used in the operating room and in office facial plastic and dermatologic surgery for the past 30 years. The technology used by MonaLisa Touch alters the way CO2 laser beams are delivered to the vagina and vulva by “fractionating” the beam into small packets of energy. For this reason, the tissue stimulation is mild and superficial, thus promoting rapid and thorough tissue healing and repair. More information is available in the “Science and Technology “ section.
Is treatment with MonaLisa Touch painful?
No. The treatment is performed in our office. We will apply a topical anesthetic gel to the treatment area. Patients have told us that they feel no pain during the 5 minute procedure. Some patients feel a slight but brief vibration sensation intermittently.
What will I feel after the procedure?
You may experience some burning and external irritation, which should respond well to topical anesthetic gel or ice packs for a day or two. Vaginal sex or penetration should be avoided for 48 hours while healing takes place.
Will Mona Lisa Touch work for me?
Studies and extensive experience show that MonaLisa Touch produces significant improvement for 85% of women who undergo the recommended treatment course.
How soon will I notice improvement in symptoms?
Because of the unique way that MonaLisa Touch affects the vagina and vulva, most patients begin to notice symptom improvement within a few days. Although many patients feel virtually complete resolution of symptoms after the first visit, two additional treatments are needed to complete the healing process.
What is the long term treatment and what follow up will be needed?
A treatment cycle consists of three office visits at 6 week intervals for most patients. During each of these three visits the laser energy system is applied with varying levels of intensity. Following the initial treatment course, repeat single treatments once a year will help to maintain healthy vaginal tissues.
Who is a candidate for MonaLisa Touch?
Any woman who has symptoms of GSM (Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause) or any woman who wishes to avoid estrogen (including women with a history of breast cancer) is a candidate. See “Science and Technology” Section for further information on GSM.
Will my health insurance pay for MonaLisa Touch?
No. Because there are no approved insurance billing codes for this procedure, we are required to bill patients directly. Please call our office for more information.
